move the recruitment needle

All you ever wanted to know about recruitment in Europe

‘Past performance predicts future success’

In a time of uncertainty, your investment in an Antal International recruitment franchise can make your future success predictable.

There is no doubt that we are experiencing a time of economic uncertainty and the challenge this presents is change! Change in the way we live our lives, the way we spend our money and the way we support our households. Perhaps most importantly it will affect the way we do business. But, change can be good and change can sometimes give people that all too important ‘push’ they need to take the plunge and do what they have always wanted, but have been too 'comfortable in a corporate ‘security’ blanket.

The key advice that Doug Bugie, the CEO of Antal International Network (the mid to senior level recruitment franchise) gives is to ‘rise to the challenge of change whilst others are indecisive’. Doug is certainly well placed to give advice on how to operate through a time of economic turbulence and come through it - not just successfully but triumphantly!

When Doug Bugie joined Antal International Network as our CEO we all knew he had a weighty background with enormous gravitas. But, he was remarkably humble about his success. It was exciting to read his story in a recent best selling autobiographical book written by James Caan. James is one of the panel of investors or ‘dragons’ on the UK prime TV program ‘Dragons Den’. James’s latest book ‘The Real Deal- My Story from Brick Lane to Dragons Den’ tells the story of how James made it from relatively humble beginnings to his success today. A large part of James’ earlier success was through building the recruitment company Alexander Mann. Doug joined forces with James to launch Humana – a mid to senior level recruitment franchise with James in 1992.

Doug gives us a very personal overview of his story:

“I moved to the United Kingdom in 1992 in the middle of the worst recession since World War II, which was far worse and visibly so than anything we are seeing today. James Caan and I built up one of the largest recruitment businesses in the world inside of 8 years together.

Prior to this I was a classic 'corporation man', the marketing director for the largest recruitment franchisor in the USA, MRI, and had sold and opened over 400 offices there. Life was good, life was challenging and the money was great, but I thought and James Caan believed we could internationalise the mid to senior recruitment concept and that’s just what we did.

I have to say, at the time, it was a case of when ‘one door closes another open’ as I had quit my job at MRI to run for the US Congress in my hometown. I had invested my life's savings at the time, but lost the race after being outspent! After thinking it through with the ever-persuasive James Caan, and arriving in the UK with just $1,500 in my pocket, we decided to join forces and start our own business in recruitment franchising together. Our business was called Humana International and grew to over $100M, with 200 offices in the UK and 27 countries in about 7 years.

If you saw James Caan’s one hour biography on the BBC2 recently, you will see he hasn't done badly for himself and I am truly glad we could be part of it together--especially proving that we could build a globally successful and incredibly profitable and saleable business worth many $ millions. This is an especially great achievement as it was achieved during a severe economic downturn "

Tony Goodwin, Chairman and Founder of Antal International sums this up with the following comment “Doug and James believed in themselves, in the concept, assembled a great team and ended up selling the business in 1999 for a huge sum of money. In fact Doug made so much money he could have done anything, so we were incredibly fortunate at Antal International to encourage Doug to take up the full time role of CEO for Antal International Network”.

Doug reflects “I was thinking the other day on how I almost retired after selling the Humana business, but became a consultant in franchising and in particular recruitment and more particularly with Antal where I’ve known Tony Goodwin since 1994 and watched his success with awe. I believe, and the evidence is overwhelming, that Antal will exceed the success we created with Humana”

Just like the story of Humana, the story of Antal International was anything but easy. Tony launched the business in 1993 from one office in the UK and we now have (including a strategic partnership with the US based SearchPath International) 120 offices, in 28 countries and across 5 continents, where customers, candidates, but more importantly fees are shared across the group and account for 30% of the revenue – which is measured in tens of millions of dollars. Antal International became the leader in Russia with over 150 recruitment consultants and built this business for a sale that was the largest private equity recruitment deal in Central and Eastern Europe in history. We continue to be the Number One player in Russia, China and Poland and are experiencing experiential grown of more than 40% per annum.

"I think there are many lessons for all of us today, about looking for opportunities and working to achieve them given the difficulty of the times. I, for one, am happy to be doing this again with my current partners at Antal international, led by Tony Goodwin, the founder of this great business. Tony showed great vision and guts by going into Eastern Europe before anyone else in our industry did and he endured the roller coaster ride there over the past 15 years to emerge with the single largest sale of a recruitment business in the regions history!" continues Doug.

In 2008 and what is heralded as a time of economic uncertainly Antal International has opened 17 new offices our franchisees have seen a growth of 106% through Q3 year on year.

The above figures gives ample proof that the mid to senior level recruitment industry is a strong performer even in the midst of economic uncertainty. You can also read this in an independently published article on the ERE website through this link. You can also read more in our recent article ‘Could a Time of Turbulence be the Right Time to Start a Business’. This is pivotal to our unwavering certainty that all our offices globally will continue to see increased profitability for the final quarter of 2008 and beyond.
Doug closes by saying “I am pleased that James captured the hard work, sheer will and determination involved in our success. My message to you is to have confidence in the strength of the Management Team behind Antal International and in their ability to continue to support people in launching and growing highly profitable recruitment business, with capital wealth generation”.

We at Antal International firmly believe the saying ‘past performance predicts future success’. We have been nominated for 3 consecutive years for ‘Franchisor of the Year’ the prestigious British Franchise Association award. Our franchisees are adding almost 30% on average to their bottom line profitability through sharing clients, business and fees.

Whether you join us at Antal International or not, we would urge you to take Doug’s advice and view this time of economic instability or change as an opportunity. Thoroughly investigate proven business models and test the credibility and strength of the team supporting and guiding you so you have absolute confidence in their ability to steer you through these times not just successfully – but triumphantly!

Doug will be speaking at the Antal International Global Conference on 4-6 December 2008. To find our more about this event and how you can invest in a recruitment franchise with Antal International please contact
